National Savings. National Savings receipts at the Masterton Post Office yesterday amounted to £ll9, bringing the total for the week to £3711. The Masterton quota for the week is £627. Home of Compassion Appeal. The final figures to hand for the recent street day appeal in Wellington in aid of the Home of Compassion show the splendid result of £3300. The waterside workers contributed £B7. Infantile Paralysis. A further positive case of infantile paralysis, mild in character, was reported to the Health Department in Dunedin yesterday. A doubtful case was also notified. Dr McKibbin, the Health Officer, has suggested that Easter camps, specially of children and young people, should be postponed. A Soldier Killed. A soldier was killed instantly at Takanini, Auckland, when the motorcycle he was riding was involved in a collision with a military vehicle. He was Corporal Renfred James Turner, married, attached to a motor-transport workshop. His wife lives at Point Chevalier. Turner, who was testing the motor-cycle, was approaching an intersection when the collision occurred. Frozen Pig Meat.
Applying to the whole of the North Island, a notice under the Pig Marketing Emergency Regulations, 1943, was gazetted last night to the effect that the Internal Marketing Department intends to acquire all frozen meat derived from porkers, baconers and overweight baconers which, between April 16 and September 30, is in, or comes into, any meat export slaughterhouse, abattoir or bacon-cur-ing establishment or any other freezing establishment. Interhouse Dance. The dance held in the Masonic Hall, Masterton, last night by the Wairarapa Interhouse Association proved most' successful. The hall was crowded. The. music was supplied by Mrs Ashton’s) orchestra, and extras were played by Aircraftman Green. A Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Miss G. Godden and Mr R. A. Knowles. The M’s.C. were Messrs L. A. Askew and W. L. Butler. Supper was served by the Interhouse girls. The next Interhouse Association dance will be held on April 30. Marriage Licenses. It should be generally known, states .the Registrar of Marriages in Masterton, Mr A. Whitaker,' that where either of the persons intending marriage is a member of any of the United States [ Forces, a certificate of marriage cannot be issued by any Registrar under the Marriage Act, 1908, except upon the production of a written approval of the intended marriage, given by the senior officer commanding the United States Forces in New Zealand. This provision is in accordance with Rule 17 of the U.S.A. Emergency Regulations, 1943. Generosity of U.S.A. Servicemen. United States servicemen were extremely generous in their support of yesterday’s Poppy Day appeal in Wellington. There were many dollar (6s Id) and five-dollar bills in collectors’ boxes. From a collector operating from the railway station stall a Marine bought 50 poppies. He asked how much they were and was told they were Is each. “Give me 50,” he said, and handed over £2 10s as casually as a man buying a box of matches. Some servicemen were not only generous with their money, but gave the collectors cigarettes as well. Storage Water Exhausted. Due to the long spell of dry weather, the water in storage at the Mangahao hydro-electricity station has been completely exhausted, and the generating plant is at present dependent on the ordinary flow of the stream, which is sufficient for the production of 500,000 units a day. The s average unit production there is 1,500,000, and when there is an over- ■ flow of water it can be increased to i 2,000,000. The Waikaremoana storage < is reported to be above the ordinary i level for this period of the year, but at Lake Taupo the storage has been ; drawn on to the extent of 21 inches, i It is stated that without reaching the I danger level it can be drawn on for s another two feet. 1
