; 4 P. & A. SOCIETY’S DECISION WAIRARAPA SHOW THIS YEAR. REFERENCE TO PATRIOTIC FUND COLLECTION. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Wairarapa P. and A. Society will hold a show this year. The decision was made unanimously at today’s meeting at Carterton of the general committee. The secretary, Mr L. H. Smart, said that if no show were held the organisation would lapse, and it would be awkward to get it going again. The grounds were available and some gathering should be held, if only a picnic, to keep the people together. Leaving a decision to the next meeting would be' too late. , , The president, Mr J. A. McLeod, agreed with Mr Smart. There was now. no reason why a show should not be held. Mr A. E. Hall suggested that the profits could be donated to the patriotic funds on the lines of the Poverty Bay Association’s show. „ , Mr G. Brown (treasurer): We will be lucky if there is any profit.” Mr McLeod said that he did not want the discussion to develop into an argument about the manner of collecting patriotic funds, but to his mind the collection of patriotic funds in New Zealand was made in the wrong way. He held that the money should be raised by taxation. By the system of voluntary collection only a half or less of the people were subscribing to Patriotic funds. If, as a society, they continued giving generous donations it would be placing the society in the position of being allowed to give and let “the other fellow” get away without giving anything. Mr Hall contended that by giving the proceeds of a show to the patriotic funds it would serve as ammunition in dealing with people who might say it was a waste of petrol, etc., to hold a show. Mr McLeod said the society had contributed to the war effort by donations, by the loss of its showgrounds for a time and by the ravages war conditions had made on the society’s finances. A show, he said, raised the standard of stock.
