GLOWING TRIBUTE

TO THE EIGHTH ARMY EXPLAINED BY THE ROME RADIO. ITALIANS LEFT WHILE GERMANS WITHDREW. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, April 15. The“ Daily Mail” says that the glowing Italian tributes to the Eighth Army have been explained by the Rome radio which stated: “Newspaper readers and listeners were surprised and shocked by the frankness of the official report on the battle of Mareth and the Wadi el Akarit, which says that our men proved worthy of this moment. While the German armoured forces withdrew, the Italians put up desperate resistance. “The report puts the facts of this incredibly hard struggle before our public. We can rightly be proud, because it was the Italians who delayed the enemy—ltalians alone.” The “Daily Mail’s” correspondent with the Eighth Army says that hundreds of French, who were formerly soldiers in Tunisia are clamouring to ; fight alongside the victorious Eighth Army, and recruiting offices have \ been opened in the principal towns. This is a contrast to the effort to raise a French brigade for the Axis, which was made by Admiral Esteva, the Vichy Resident-General, who in a proclamation on February 26 admitted that only 240 had volunteered throughout Tunisia.
