TURF ITEMS. Splendid nominations have been received for the Wairaraoa Racing Club’s Easter fixture at the beautiful Tauherenikau course and as the greatdr part of the horses entered are from local and nearby stables it is expected that there will be few dropping out by acceptance night. On the first day, the big event, the Easter Handicap, has a good class entered with such runners as Mahaina, Enrich, Dynasty, Flying Spy, Cheerful Lady and Nighean. The sprint, over seven furlongs has also attracted good nominations in which Ivar, Autolite, Cheerful Lady (claiming dual engagements), Minority. The Champ, Miss Phaleron and Sanction illustrate the quality cf the fields. The other events on the card are also well patronised. The club is making splendid progress in cleaning up the course and the bush surroundings. The track is being watered daily and is stated to be resuming its former good order. The last meeting was held at Easter, 1941. Arrangements are being made to provide train and bus services for patrons. Foutatau a Starter. Although Poutatau’s name was inadvertently dropped out of the recently published acceptances for the Great Easter Handicap of seven furlongs, carrying a stake of £l,OOO, at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Easter meeting at Riccarton. Mr J. M. James, of Masterton, who owns Poutatau, stated today that all going well his Collusus gelding will be a starter. Poutatau is a good honest runner and carries the colours of a popular sportsman. Worthy Topweights. The position cf top-weight, with impost of 19.4, has fallen to the lot of that brilliant sprinter Lord Nuffield, in the 1 Great Easter Handicap, at Riccarton. On the other side of the double, the Great Autumn Handicap, Royal Lancer holds pride of place with 19.3. Nothing Definite Yet. As Trainer T. R.- George is at present in Wellington, nothing definite is available yet regarding the plans for The Champ and Wee Bun. Beth feature in the C.J.C. and Tauherenikau programmes. Cheerful Lady. Cheerful Lady, who has been disappointing in her racing this season, is racing under the colours of a new sportsman to the game in Mr A. V. Faulknor, of Lansdowne. Mr Faulknor is another addition to the large number of owners in the district.
