Recently the popular Chessington Circus paid a visit to London and gave shows in the very heart of the West End. The nightly passage of the elephants to and from the circus has brought into existence a somewhat unexpected new London bye-law, i.e., that elephants must be illuminated in built-up areas. Encounters with unilluminated elephants in the blackout were apparently beginning to leave their mark on the nerves of blitz-har--dened citizens. The 8.8. C. paid a visit to the circus in order to include a broadcast from the performance in “Radio Newsreel.” At the first try-out all was going merrily until suddenly the recording apparatus went dead. Investigation showed that one of the elephants was chewing the cable that connected the “mike” with the recording car. It is suggested that he was trying to supply current for his tail lamp.
