COUNTRY DISTRICTS

RED CROSS SUB=CENTRE MORE SPINNERS WANTED. VARIOUS HELPERS THANKED. The monthly meeting of the Country District’s Sub-Centre of the Red Cross Society was held yesterday in the Country Women’s Club, Mrs A. C. Gawith presiding. Mrs Gawith stated in her report that letters had been received from Sisters Mavis Chisholm, 8.R.C., Mary Major, H. Bakewell and Phyllis Hubbard thanking the sub-centre for its Christmas parcels and giving interesting news of their doings overseas. Mrs Gawith expressed the branch’s sincere appreciation to Miss Sutherland for the use of rooms above her shop free of rent. These rooms had been used since the June earthquake for storage purposes. Thanks were also extended to Mesdames Eric Shaw, Mitchell and Miss N. Boddington for fleeces; to the Papier Mache Circle connected with the Art Club, for a donation, and to members who had forwarded generous donations to they branch. Mrs J. de Castro, convenor of the sewing group, gave a report on the sewing completed during the month and a list of garments sent to headquarters. Mrs W. James reported on the V.A.D. activities and said that of the numbers that had trained only three girls were available in Masterton for permanent V.A.D. duty at the hospital. It was mentioned, too, that papier mache cups were urgently needed, also mittens and gloves for wounded men. As the supply of homespun wool was short, the sub-centre urgently needed more spinners. Any person wishing to learn to spin is asked to communicate with Mrs A. L. Milne, ’phone 1796. Delegates elected to the Red Cross Centre were Mesdames W. James, A. C. Gawith, J. de Castro and Miss R. Elliott. Miss M. Reader, V.A.D. representative from the branch to the Red Cross parade held recently in Wellington, spoke briefly of the investiture of Lady Newell at Government'House, as Commander-in-Chief of the V.A’s.
