CAMPAIGN IN TUNISIA OBSERVATIONS BY AMERICAN MINISTER. GREAT TASKS FACING ALLIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, April 13. “The campaign in North Africa is merely a preliminary skirmish when viewed in the setting of the entire war scene,” said the Under-Secretary of War, Mr Patterson, addressing the Military Committee of the House of Representatives. “General Eisenhower’s armies will drive the Germans and Italians into the Mediterranean or force them to surrender,” he said, “but the Nazis will still hold their vast gains in Europe and the Japanese will still hold the rich resources they have seized. Therefore, German-occupied Europe and the lands occupied by the Japanese are the chief battle-grounds.” Mr Patterson said he believed that the means of victory were in our hands but the struggle would be bitter and the casualties heavy.
