SPLENDID SHIPS

NEW TYPE BRITISH CRUISERS. FEATURES OF THE FIJI CLASS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.15 a.m.) RUGBY, April 14. A new cruiser, H.M.S. Newfoundland, of the Fiji Class, is in commission. These ships were built under the. restrictions of the London Naval Treaty and are a triumph of naval design and construction. They are of such armament, speed and endurance as would have required, a few years ago, much more than their displacement of 8,000 tons. Both their complement and horse-power exceed, by a considerable margin, those of many battleships which fought in the last war. They carry three aircraft, with a catapult, and are armed with sixinch guns, four-inch anti-aircraft guns and many smaller guns.
