The Admiralty states: “On each of the last two nights, our light forces had short, sharp engagements with enemy patrol craft close to the Dutch coast. As a result of these engagements considerable damage was caused to enemy craft and many casualties must have been inflicted. During the course of last night’s engagement it is regretted that Lieuten-ant-Commander R. P. Hichens, D. 5.0., R.N.V.R., was killed. Other casualties sustained during these two night were two officers and two ratings wounded. All our ships returned safely to harbour. Lieutenant-Commander Hichens was the senior officer of the flotilla. He wore the D.S.O. with Bar, and the D.S.C. with two Bars, and had gained these awards on more than fifteen actions with coastal forces.
