ABBOTSFORD LIME
GEOLOGICAL OFFICE REPORT. An officer of the Geological Survey Office, who visited the site at Abbotsford where it is proposed to develop a quarry for the production of agricultural lime, reported on his inspection to yesterday afternoon’s meeting of the Masterton County Council. The County Clerk, Mr J. C. D. Mackley, was instructed to call a meeting of Uriti Riding ratepayers within the next week regarding the matter. The reports stated that the limestone deposits were resting on mudstone foundations. Practically, the upper part of the hill consisted entirely of limestone and in the opinion of the geologist, there were millions of tons of limestone in the area it was proposed to quarry. The stone was of a high quality broken shell or beach limestone. The officer mentioned that! as the Bennett’s Hill quarry, a mile] away, produced limestone which was in no way inferior, it was probable that it could undersell Abbotsford as it was easier to be quarried. An analysis showed tests ranging from 83 to 94 per cent in quality while limestone from Bennett’s Hill showed a test of 79 per cent. The report was received without discussion.
