WAR TIME CAMPS
USE AS TRAINING CENTRES FOR HOUSE CONSTRUCTION WORKERS. ADVOCATED BY OPPOSITION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 12|. The use after the war of military camps as centres of vocational training for building workers was advocated by the Leader of the National Party (Mr S. G. Holland), in an address here founder the plan contemplated by his party, Mr Holland said, 25,000 extra men could be trained for full-time employment in house building for at least ten years. This would overcome the housing problem, which, since 1940, had become progressively worse. Freehold titles would be available to all who desired them, Mr Holland added. Slum clearance would be tackled, and residential areas would be developed on the outskirts of towns and cities where there would be sufficient land for peoole to grow vegetables and produce eggs and fruit, thus reducing their living costs. There would be a scheme for maintenance by contract. Someone would say these things would cost a lot, but if the country could afford 133 millions in one year for winning the war, it could afford the cost of winning the peace.
