C. broadcast by Major Patrick Campbell, who recently returned to Britain after eighteen months with the Royal Signals in West Africa: “I remember on one occasion having to lay an underground cable over a distance of about fifteen miles — and, as usual, in a bit of a hurry. We dug our trench over the route and put in the cable; we left the filling in of this trench until the line was through. Well that particular line wasn’t through when he expected it to be, and it didn’t take us very long to find out why. The African householder has a habit of lighting his cooking fire outside his house, and if he possibly can, in a ditch. That new trench of ours was a godsend to the local inhabitants.”
