♦ BOROUGH ' MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meetng of the Featherston Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr J. W. Card), Councillors S. P. Batcheler, G. A. Farrier, W. J. Boston, C. R. Skipage, C. C. Kenward, R. R. P. Hardy and T. G. Hardie. An apology for absence was received from Cr B. B. Donald. The treasurer reported as follows:— District Fund A/c cr. £822 5s 2d, Cemetery A/c cr. £llO 17s 6d, Domain A/c cr. £32 14s, Mayor’s Relief Fund A/c cr. £75 14s 9d, Water Supply Loan 1936 A/c £47 Is 3d, Library A/c cr. £3l Os Bd. The receipts since the last meeting totalled £1529 3s 6d. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £709 5s 7d. W. J. Jeffery and J. Moriarity wrote applying for a renewal of billiard room licenses, which were granted subject to the police report. W. Houston wrote offering to keep the fences in order and the noxious weeds down on Domain No. 2 for the grazing rights. It was stated that the area had been already let to Mr J. W. Fellingham. Mrs B. A. Donald wrote slating that she wished to erect a fence at her property in Bell Street and would like the footpath levelled before starting the work. The works committee is to inspect the site. The Masterton County Council forwarded a cheque for £34 Is 5d as the council’s share of heavy traffic fees to February 28. W. G. Everett wrote stating that he had received notice in regard to trim-’ ming hedges at his property in Bethune Street, but owing to the shortage of Labour he had been unable to comply with the council’s demand. The district engineer of public works' wrote advising that extra maintenance subsidy would be granted where military traffic damaged the road. The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote stating that owing to earthquake damage the board intended to apply for a loan of £45,000 instead of the former proposal of £15,000 and asked if the council had any objections. It was resolved to reply that the council had no objection. The Patriotic Committee wrote asking that a reduction of rent be made to them for the Town Hall on May 2, when it was intended to hold a gathering at which soldiers would be guests. It was resolved that the hall be granted free on any night except Sunday. The arrangements made for Anzac Day were that the children and Boy Scouts • should assemble at the cemetery to place the uslual flags on the soldiers’ graves, and that adults be asked to assemble and bring wreaths for placing on the Memorial at 2.30 p.m. A report was read showing that' the Boy Scouts were urgently in need of funds. The council decided to head a list with £2, hoping that friends would rally round and support this worthy object. During the Featherston black-out period boys from the Scouts did good work at the Anzac Hospital and other places. RED CROSS SOCIETY GENERAL COMMITTEE MEETING. At a meeting of the general committee of the Featherston Sub-Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, Mrs Sharp presided over a good attendance and welcomed new members to the committee. The following were elected to the executive: —Mesdames C. Carlyon, J. McKenzie, W. Feast, H. Bergh, together with office-bearers, Mesdames Sharp, Lawson and Hunter. It was resolved to donate £5O to the Sick and Wounded and Prisoners of War Parcel Fund. The committee plans by further efforts, to make another contribution to this fund. An appeal was made for old linen, printed material suitable for ditty bags and old towelling. It was decided to hold general committee meetings on the second Friday in each month. Farewell Gathering. At a gathering held recently in the Kahutara School Miss Berryman, who has been appointed to another school was the guest of honour. Tony Ness, on behalf of the pupils, made a presentation of a crystal vase to Miss Berryman and thanked her for what she had done for the children of the school. Mr Playle. chairman of the school committee, in asking Miss Berryman to accept a wall mirror from the parents, spoke of the regret which the residents felt at losing Miss Berryman. Mr Pottinger, headmaster, spoke in a similar strain. Miss Berryman was handed a bouquet, shoulder spray and posy from the pupils and ex-pupils. The parents supplied afternoon tea. Dance in Town Hall. There was a good attendance at the weekly dance held in the Town Hall on Saturday night. The music was supplied by • Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra, and extras were played by Misses G. Fraser and C. Saba. A Monte Carlo dance was won by Miss D. Scott and partner. The Junior Patriotic Committee had charge of the supper arrangements. COSY THEATRE “YOU BELONG TO ME.” On Wednesday night the programme will be headed by the splendid comedy, “You Belong To Me,” featuring Edgar Buchanan, Roger Clarke, Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda.
