BALMORAL CASE

PROPRIETRESS FOUND GUILTY OF USING HOTEL AS HOUSE OF ILL FAME. £lOO FINE & THREE MONTHS IN GAOL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The denial of Sarah Anne Vangioni, aged 64, proprietress of the Balmoral Private Hotel, that she knew of any incidents of immorality in the hotel was not accepted by the Magistrate, Mr W. F. Stilwell, in a reserved judgment at the Magistrate’s Court today, and he convicted her of permitting the hotel to be used as a house of ill fame. She was fined £lOO and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. Mr Stilwell said he was satisfied that she knew in general of what was going on under her roof, and though she made some pretence of disapproval, the whole circumstances pointed irresistibly to the conclusion that she connived at it. He was satisfied that the house had developed into a house of ill fame.
