In Washington President Roosevelt described his new anti-inflation programme as a stool—the legs of which were, firstly, control of wages; secondly, control oi iooo prices; thirdly, rationing; fourthly, a decrease of purchasing power through taxation and savings. Mr Roosevelt said he was trying to get the national economy on a more even level, to avoid peaks and valleys. He added that additional taxes and compulsory savings were features of the programme which required Congressional action.
