In her fifth broadcast during the war Queen Elizabeth tonight .spoke to the women of the Empire, who, she said, just as splendidly as men were taking their share in the tasks of war. In a hundred ways, said her Majesty, women had filled the places 'of men who had gone to fight. “You have done work as great as in any book ever written,” the Queen declared. “You, too, in these years of tragedy and glory, of crushing sorrow and splendid achievement, have earned the gratitude and admiration of all mankind, and I am sure every man doing his man’s share in the grim task of winning the war would agree. It is high time someone told you so.”
