STRUCK BY MacARTHUR’S BOMBERS
Two Japanese Cruisers & Large Destroyer Sunk NUMBER OF OTHER VESSELS DESTROYED • OR HEAVILY DAMAGED
HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL ATTACKS IN NEW GUINEA WATERS ' SYDNEY, April 4. General MacArthur’s air force has again taken heavy toll of Japanese war and merchant shipping concentrations in the waters to the north of Australia. In attacks on Thursday and Friday, Flying Fortresses and Liberators sank a heavy cruiser, a light cruiser and a large destroyer, probably sank a 6000-ton merchantman, inflicted heavy damage on two other destroyers and a 10,000-ion merchantman, and probably damaged other warships and merchantmen. These were the stoutest blows that have been struck against Japanese shipping since the battle of the Bismarck Sea early last month. The newest enemy concentrations were attacked in the harbour of Kavieng, Nev/ Ireland, and in the near waters round the coast.
