NEW ZEALANDER IN COMMAND OF SUBMARINE OPERATIONS IN MANY WATERS. EIGHT ENEMY SHIPS SUNK. (Special P.A. Correspondent.) (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, April 2. The distinction of being the only _ New Zealander in command of a ® present is held by the 25-year-old Lieuten ant L. Herrick, of Hastings, D.S.C., of the R He al entered the Royal Navy in January, 1937, and was promoted to full lieutenant in April, 1940. He was in the Tigress in July, 1940 and was mentioned in dispatches in JulV 1941. The Tigress, with her sister slidmarine, the Trident, sank five enemy ships in northern waters during 1941, wheni he Germans were trying to prevent the supply ing of Murmansk. In a further attack, against a heavilv escorted convoy, she sank two more ships, also an oil tanker nearer England After the Tigress completed one successful trip Soviet sailors w el conmd hex officers and ship’s company at a Russian base. Since serving in the Tigress Lieutenant Herrick has served in five other su - marines, four of which he commanded. Ht was awarded the D.S.C. in November, 1942, “for courage and skill in successful pa ros in His Majesty's submarines. He is now believed to be operating in the Meditei ranean. -..-
