GENERAL ELECTION

NEW POLITICAL PARTY SAID TO HAVE BEEN FORMED. STATEMENT BY MR. KYLE. (By Telegraph—Prcwi Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 1. A “win the war” group with Messrs. Coates, Hamilton and Massey, M.P.’s, as the leading members has been formed to contest Parliamentary seals at the general election, according to a statement by Mr. Kyle, M.P., who announced his independence when the National Parly decided to withdraw its members from the War Administration. “Men will be selected by the group to contest many seats, their policy being to win the war first and to deal with rehabilitation,” said Mr. Kyle, who will again contest the Riccarton seat. Commenting on Mr. Kyle’s statement the Opposition leader, Mr Holland, said “The story told by Mr. Kyle of a new political party based on Messrs. Hamilton and Coates with Mr. Kyle as Chief Whip sounds to me very much as if it is a little whistling by Mr. Kyle to keep up his courage. I should require to have the story confirmed by Messrs. Hamilton and Coates before I would be prepared to accept it seriously.” RICCARTON SEAT NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 1. The National Party has elected 2nd Lieut. J. T. Watts as its candidate to contest the Riccarton seat, at present held by Mr H. S. S. Kyle, Independent, at the forthcoming general elections. Lieut. Watts is aged 34 and is practising on his own account as a barrister and solicitor in Christchurch. SOLDIER=LABOUR PARTY CANDIDATES RECOMMENDED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, April 1. Candidates for the Democratic Sol-dier-Labour Party to be recommended to the Wellington executive, will be: Roskill, Sergt. Keith Hay; Auckland West, Flight Lieutenant Patrick Thomas Curran; Auckland Suburbs, Captain Pennefather, M.C., D.C.M.; Grey Lynn, Mr. John A. Lee, D.C.M.; Onehunga, Mr. Norman V. Douglas; Auckland East, Mrs. J. A. Lee. In the event of a by-election in the northern area, Captain Pennefather will be a candidate.

Mr. Lee said that Captain Pennefather, when a sergeant in the last war, was decorated with the D.C.M. for swimming the River Lys and attacking the Germans in circumstances of great gallantry. He was recommended for the V.C. but received the M.C. for exposing himself to machinegun fire to bring in wounded.
