The origin of the fire is a mystery as the store had not been in use for a long period. Dry Spell Broken. Steady rain in Auckland for nine hours yesterday broke the long dry spell and relieved the acute water position, but much more is needed to overcome the effects of the drought. Government records showed that .49inch fell up to 9 a.m., and the rain became heavier till shortly before midday, when there was a lull of less than an hour. <The rain then resumed. Farmers, orchardists and market gardeners declare that a soaking rain while the ground is still warm would bring great benefit. Work on Farms.
