SETTLEMENT LAND
SUITABLE FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS. FARMERS’ UNION SUGGESTION. A motion that the Rehabilitation Board have its attention drawn to the fact that the Balfour Estate property in the Pahiatua district, which is on the market for sale, would be a desirable property to cut up for settlement by returned soldiers was carried at yesterday’s ipeeting in Masterton of the Wairarapa Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union. Mr. J. H. Bremner, Pahiatua, said that the Balfour property adjoined Pahiatua and was situated opposite the racecourse. Attempts had been made by local bodies to get the estate cut up as it was ideal for that purpose. There was an area of 2,600 acres in the property. Mr. Bremner consi’dered that the time was opportune for the matter to be brought before the Government to have the land secured for soldier settlement. The land was suitable for dairying, mixed and sheep farming. There was plenty of limestone on the area and the property could be easily roaded. i Mr. J. L. Heckler supported Mr. Bremner’s remarks.
