BURMA CAMPAIGN
LIMITS ON ALLIED ACTION ON ACCOUNT OF INADEQUATE TRANSPORT. BITTER FIGHTING EXPECTED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) RUGBY. March 25. Fighting in the Arakan district in Burma makes it increasingly clear that the Japanese objective is to drive us from 'Buthidaung and Maungdaw before the monsoon, says a war correspondent. It is also clear that we have no intention of being driven out and bitter fighting will probably occur before the weather brings comparative peace on the Maku Peninsula. The Japanese fast-moving patrols have caused a rearrangement of our forces to meet threats to our flanks and also 'the shortening of our line of communication. Our chief disadvantage has been the slow river craft. laboriously driven by oars, whereas the enemy has brought up brand new motorlaunches from Japan, which are fast and well-armed and able to make (short work of sampans. The future policy in Arakan is governed by supply. Roads must be considered in relation to 200 inches of rain.in a few months and river transport undoubtedly will play a big part. The enemy have achieved mobility with no more than animal and river transport. MORE BLOWS STRUCK AT THE JAPANESE IN BURMA. R.A.F. BOMBERS & FIGHTERS ACTIVE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) RUGBY. March 25. An India joint air communique states: “Last night R.A.F. bombers attacked a Japanese base aerodrome at Toungoo. where bombs burst on runways and dispersal areas and several fires were left burning. Yesterday low-level offensive patrols were carried out along the Kaladan and Mayu rivers and enemy targets were vigorously machine-gunned. None of our aircraft' are missing. About dawn yesterday a few enemy aircraft dropped bombs in the Chittagong area, without causing damage or casualties.”
