REPEATED GERMAN COUNTERATTACKS FIERCE CONFLICT NORTH-EAST OF SMOLENSK. ENEMY LINES OF RETREAT THICKLY MINED. LONDON, March 25. | Repeated German counter-attacks [failed to halt the Russian advance north of Duchovshchima, 30 miles north-east of Smolensk, according to front-line dispatches quoted by Moscow radio. The Germans seven times counter-attacked one Russian unit, but were driven back. The Germans finally began to retreat southward, leaving hundreds of dead on the battlefield. Much fighting on this front is going on in a forest where only small forces ’ can operate. Picked Red Army units frequently infiltrate through the German lines, surprising them from the rear. One strongly fortified point was surrounded before being stormed simultaneously from four sides. All the roads along the German line of retreat are thickly mined. The Russians advancing along the i west bank of the upper Dnieper repulsed a fierce counter-attack and knocked out 23 German tanks.
