FAKED REPORTS
ON STEEL FOR ARMAMENTS. DISCLOSURE IN UNITED STATES. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON, March 23. The Senate investigating committee under the chairmanship of Senator Truman has released statements by employees of the Carnegie Illinois Steel Company disclosing that the tensile strengths and chemical analysis of steel-plates haa been faked on output going to the Navy, the Maritime Commission and lend-lease. Several employees gave evidence of false tensile strengths being recorded. Senator Truman said that the committee would probe reports that defective engines had caused 30 per cent of warplane crashes Mr J. Lester ,Perry, president of the Carnegie Illinois Steel Corporation, testified that the higher management of his company was in no way involved in the failure to carry out the prescribed testing procedures. Such officials never permitted or condoned deviations on the steel-plate ordered by the Navy. He said that the only explanation he could give was that a few individuals, honestly believing that the plates in question would meet all requirements, grew lax under pressure of the heavy production of high-quality steel for the war effort.
