POPULAR INITIATIVE

IN THE SOVIET UNION. CONTRIBUTIONS TO FIGHTING FORCES. Speaking of the spirit in which the people of the Soviet Union are fighting the war, “Pravda” wrote recently:— “A constant stream of trains carrying armaments, food and ammunition flows to our front. Never satisfied with the mere fulfilment of State plans, the working people of towns and villages are contributing money to build more tanks, planes, torpedo-boats and armoured trains. The initiative displayed by the Tambov and Saratov collective farmers has been taken up widely throughout the country. Men and women farmers of the Penza region have collected 14,000,0000 roubles to build aircraft for the defenders of Stalingrad. “With the money so far collected eight squadrons have been built and are already on active service at the front. Collective farmers of the Gorky region are building a squadron to be named ‘Valery Chkalov.’ “There is no limit to the initiative of the working people of our great land. Let the force of the Red Army’s blows grow yet stronger! Multiply the Nazis’ losses! Let every Fascist invader be laid low on our soil!”
