FOOD FRONT
NEW MEASURES PROPOSED IN AUSTRALIA. REGIMENTATION OF SUPPLIES. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 12.55 p.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Australians would have to accept the regimentation of their food supplies because a food front might well be the most important of the United Nations war fronts for the remainder of the struggle. This warning has been given by the Minister of Supply, Mi’ J. A. Beasley, who, as well as foreshadowing further controls over the consumption of foodstuffs, said Australia must step up production, in order to honour its obligation to feed the people of Britain and other Allied nations and countries won back from the enemy. Mr Beasley made this statement following upon a meeting of the Food Council. Other announcements included: No rice for civilians this year, because of the urgent demands of New Guinea natives and the Army; 'extra canned fruit and chocolate for civilian consumption; a survey of butter prices, wages and manpower in the dairying industry will be made. The Food Council has approved a “grow more vegetables” campaign, financed by the Commonwealth.
