BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE
PAID TO GENERAL FREYBERG. DEEDS OF NEW ZEALAND DIVISION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A tribute to the Commander-in-Chief of the New Zealand Division in North Africa. Sir Bernard Cyril Freyberg, V.C., K.C.8., K.8.E., D.S.O. and two bars, on his 53rd birthday, March was broadcast as a special feature by the British Broadcasting Corporation in its Pacific service last night. “No fighting unit in this war has gained for itself such laurels as has the New Zealand Division,” ran one passage in the script, which was written by the Australian, Colin Wills. Its exploits in Greece, where it helped to cover the evacuation of the main body of troops, and in Crete, were dramatically recalled, as were its heroic deeds in the defence of Egypt and the defeat of Rommel from El Alamein to Tripoli.
