LOSS OF BIELGOROD
AFTER VIOLENT FIGHTING p- ~~ ANNOUNCED BY RUSSIANS. ATTACKS IN NEW AREAS. LONDON, March 21. A Soviet communique states that the Russians have evacuated Bielgorod, after violent fighting. Bielgorod is an important railway junction between Kharkov and Kursk. The Russians have beaten off more enerqy attacks on bridgeheads south of Kharkov. The Germans are still rushing up fresh troops, who are immediately thrown into the battle. The Germans have launched a new attack 40 miles north of Briansk. After three days of heavy fighting, the Russians still hold their positions. Two thousand enemy troops have been killed and an enemy motorised infantry unit routed. Heavy fighting is also reported on the outskirts of Staraya Russa and the Germans state that the Russians have launched new attacks on the Leningrad front. In the Kuban Country the Red Army has driven a wedge into a • German bridgehead and captured a town 55 miles north of Krasnodar.
