GAINED BY NAZIS ON KHARKOV FRONT
But Donetz River Nowhere Crossed
SOVIET PROGRESS TOWARDS AND IN NORTH MORE ENEMY STRONGHOLDS CAPTURED SOUTH OF LAKE ILMEN LONDON, March 23. In Russia the Germans have gained some ground on the Kharkov front by sheer weight of numbers. Further Russian successes are reported on the central and northern fronts. Mr Paul Winterton states that although the enemy has gained more ground on the Kharkov front, there is still no suggestion that he has succeeded in crossing the Donetz River at any point. On the central front the Russians are now trying hard to tighten their grip on the western bank of the Dnieper River. The quick and early thaw is helping the German defence, and the Russian engineers are having difficulty in bridging the river. Soviet columns pushing along the road and railway to Smolensk are making steady progress. On the northern front, the Russians have captured more enemy strongholds south of Lake Ilmen.
