MADE BY AMERICANS IN SOUTHERN TUNISIA
Along Road Towards Gabes FRENCH CO-OPERATIN(||n DRIVE ON SENED PHENOMENAL RAINFALL HINDERING OPERATIONS LONDON, March 19. United States forces in Southern Tunisia have occupied El Guetar, east of Gafsa. Other Allied forces are pushing- on towards Sened, further north. United States forces have pushed 12 miles or more beyond Gafsa along the road to Gabes and are now only 70 miles from the sea. The Algiers radio states that a second column of American and French troops is advancing a little further north and is rapidly approaching Sened, 27 miles from Gafsa, in the direction of Sfax. ' Since Tuesday evening the Americans have advanced between 40 and 50 miles and have already reoccupied most of the positions they had to give up when Rommel’s tanks attacked in Southern Tunisia last month. One reason for the speed of the advance is that there has been little enemy resistance. On the other hand, a large number of mines had to be dealt with. The weather is phenomenally bad. One correspondent states that in the last two days tw.o inches of rain have fallen, or a quarter of the annual rainfall in these parts. There are floods in places and many of the roads are almost impassable for vehicles until the ground dries up again. EIGHTH ARMY ADJUSTMENTS. The only news from the Mareth battlefront is that General Montgomery’s men have made what is described in an Allied communique as some adjustments along the front. The enemy did not interfere much with these movements. Aircraft bombed targets near Mareth village yesterday. In Northern Tunisia, German pressure continues west of Sed Jenane. The enemy occupied Temara yesterday after an Allied withdrawal on the previous night. Aircraft bombed Temara soon after the German occupation. Fighting is still going on three miles south-west of the village.
