TURKISH PREMIER
DECLARATION OF FRIENDSHIP WITH BRITAIN. “VITAL NEEDS OF BOTH NATIONS” (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) INSTANBUL, March 17. “We warmly grasp the hand extended to us by the British Government,” said the Premier, Mr Saracoglu, addressing the Assembly. “The reaffirmation of British and Turkish friendship is not dictated by the moment’s emergencies, but is the vital need of both nations. We got to know Mr. Churchill more intimately following the Arana meeting, and to love him better. The Government will deny the Army nothing which will increase its fighting power.” The Assembly unanimously carried a vote of confidence in the Government. Air Chief Marshal Sir William Sholto, Air Officer Commanding in the Middle East, was received by President Inonu of Turkey, being introduced by Marshal Chakmak, the Turkish Chief of Staff. The British Ambassador, Sir Hughe Knatchbull-Hugesson, was also present. Sir William was also received by the Turkish Premier, Mr. Saracoglu, before returning to Cairo from Ankara.
