NOTED AUSTRALIAN AIRMAN. RECENT CASUALTIES - DURING TRAINING. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) (By reieg p SYD NEY, March 18. One of Australia’s best-known fighter pilots, Squadron Leader Raymond ThoroldSmith is reported missing on air operations somewhere in Australia. The leader of an Australian Spitfire squadron, he failed to return from an interception mission. Smith was a Sydney University student before enisting in Mav, 1940, and he represented both New South Wales and Combined Universities at Rugby Union. Sixteen R.A.A.F. men have been killed m four crashes during training exercises in the past week.
