SHOT BY GUARD
WHILE STEALING PETROL BOY WOUNDED IN LEG. SEQUEL IN COURT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Mention was made yesterday in the Magistrate's Court, Wellington, of a boy 161 years of age, who was shot in the leg’ when he and two companions ignored the challenge of a sentry who interrupted them when they were stealing petrol on March 10. Detective Sergeant Thompson was outlining the case against two youths. Ivan Henry White, a driver,, aged 17, and Patrick Joseph Burns, a soldier, aged 20, who pleaded guilty to three joint charges of stealing 16 gallons of petrol from a military dump, six gallons from the Cunningham Carrying Company, and a wheel and tire valued at £5 from the car of K. F. W. Grimstrup. Detective Sergeant Thompson said the boy was at present in hospital, but would appear before the Court later. Mr C. A. L. Treadwell, for Burns, said it took two hours for a third person to persuade Burns and White to go on the escapade. Fortunately the guard was on the alert and challenged, but they ran away, and the boy got poetic justice by being shot in the leg. Mr R. R. Scott, for White, said his client stayed in the car all the time at the military dump, and that the stealing of the wheel and tire was the boy’s suggestion. Mr Stilwell, S.M., said representations had been made repeatedly by the police about the siphoning of petrol and the difficulty of detecting it. He felt pained to have to do it, but he felt justified in imposing imprisonment. Both accused would be sentenced to 14 days’ hard labour on each of the first two charges, and would be convicted and discharged on the third.
