CHANNEL ISLANDS
OFFER BY LORD PORTSEA. TO TAKE SHIPLOAD OF FOOD. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 11.10 a.m.) RUGBY, March 18. In the course of discussions in the House of Lords on the food situation in the Channel Islands, Lord Portsea re;newed his offer to take a ship and food to the islands. “The ship is ready and so am I,” he said. “I have had nothing whatever from the Government since making the suggestion except that they said: ‘The Germans would shoot you.’ I should take that risk gladly.” He added that the Germans would have to be consulted. In reply, Lord Selborne said: “I can assure the House that the moment it is militarily possible, we shall reoccupy the islands and feed them, and -bring them all the services that the people of the British Isles enjoy.” Lord Portsea said that he hoped that the Government would again consider the offer made by him to take a ship and food to the islands, and would take steps for negotiations to be opened with the German Government.
