BOMBS ON GERMANY

SOME IMPRESSIVE FACTS 10,000 TONS DELIVERED IN FEBRUARY TOWN OF ESSEN CHANGED OUT OF RECOGNITION. THOUSANDS OF GUNS DEFENDING RUHR. LONDON, March 17. Some striking new facts about the recent powerful R.A.F. air blows against Germany have been given. The Germans have had to bring up 300 guns to defend Essen alone and for the defence of the Ruhr the Germans have now massed 3,000 anti-air-craft guns, assisted by 500 searchlights. It is disclosed that in each of the recent big raids on Essen, those on March 5 and 12, more than 500 bombers took part. This means that 3,000 men of the R.A.F. participated in each raid. In February, Britain’s bombers unloaded more than 1200 giant 4,0001 b. bombs on Germany, but this huge load is only a fraction of the total weight dropped. Altogether, 10,000 tons of bombs were delivered to Germany in February, the month of Britain’s heaviest air attack. The Germans are still speaking about the last big raid on Essen. One German paper said it was the heaviest raid ever suffered by a German town. Great areas have been so changed by bombing that one must rely on memory to recall their former appearance.
