“ERZATZ GUARD”
MEMBERS OF PETAIN’S LEGION. AMONG THE MOST SCARED PEOPLE IN FRANCE. Members of Petain's National Legion, a counterpart of the Nazi S.S., are among the most scared people in France, an overseas writer states. “Many have deserted, and are to be found amorig the crowds of refugees who have been crossing the Pyrenees into Spain since the Germans occupied the hitherto unoccupied zone. The Germans feel the utmost contempt for this ersatz guard. The French hate these guards who have banked on their country eventually coming under the influence of Germany in a collaboration which had for two years past been so loudly preached by Petain arid the late Darlan. Lists of names of these guards have appeared on the walls of many towns and villages in France, and they know what this means, so they are not waiting but trying to get out as fast as they can. A Frenchman recently in France who escaped to join General de Gaulle said that'the life of these traitors will not be worth a minute’s purchase the day the German collapse comes, and everyone in France is now sure it is coming.
It was of one of these comic-opera dressed guards that a Frenchman asked whether the guard was German, replied: “Not even.” .
