MR CHURCHILL
CHEERED ON REAPPEARANCE . IN COMMONS. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, March 16. The Prime Minister, Mr Winston Churchill, on returning to the House of Commons this morning, was greeted with prolonged cheering. ■ Mr Churchill shook hands with Colonel Clifton Brown and congratulated him on his election as Speaker. Mr Churchill also shook hands with Admiral James, who was recently elected member for Portsmouth. Miss Ellen Wilkinson, entering the House with the aid of a stick, as the result of a recent accident, was greeted by Mr Churchill with: “Was your journey really necessary?” and the Prime Minister’s use of the famous British railway slogan provoked loud laughter. Mr Churchill’s first duty was to ask the Speaker for a longer question period —which the Speaker granted without, he said, creating a precedent—in view of the unusual circumstances of the earlier debate.
