Visiting Servicemen.

Reference to the exemplary behaviour of the visiting servicemen in the district was made by the Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council. Blood Transfusion Service. The need of a more efficient blood ‘transfusion service in the district was stressed by Mr Norman Lee, ManagingSecretary of the Wairarapa Hospital Board, at today’s meeting of the board. A recent emergency, he said, had shown shortcomings. Meat Delivery Zoning. A strong protest against the action of the Government in providing for the zoning of meat deliveries in Masterton by regulation without the Zoning Committee being consulted was made by Councillor W. Kemp at last right’s meeting of the Master ton Borough Council. He said that it was very wrong and that it had been a waste of time for the council to appoint him as a member of the local Zoning Committee Mr G. T. O’Hara Smith (Town Clerk) said he had received a letter from the Zoning Controller asking him to convene a meeting of the local committee but he had not been able to call a meeting as the Masterton Retailers’ Association had not appointed a representative. Earthquake Damage Relief. Referring to earthquake damage relief at last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, the Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, reported that no further progress had been made in obtaining more assistance from the Government than that proposed by the Treasury. Mr Jordan said that he had been bold enough to say that the Treasury’s plan, which involved the investigation of thousands, of chimney accounts, was silly. However it was apparent that the Treasury was the “king of the situation” and the representations he and others had made had cut no ice with I the Prime Minister. Mr Jordan said that the emergency committees of the j Municipal Association and the Counties’ Association of New Zealand would meet at a conference today to discuss the matter and also the incidence of hospital taxation. The Adjutant of the Masterton Home Guard battalion notifies that the quartermaster’s store of the battalion will be closed from April 20 to April 30, inclusive, for the purpose of stock taking. The Women’s War Service Auxiliary will hold a dance in the Masonic Hall tonight. The music will be supplied by Mrs Ashton’s Orchestra, and novelty dances will be held. An enjoyable time is promised patrons. The attention of members of the Saint Andrew Society is drawn to an j advertisement in this issue notifying i them of the annual general meeting I to be held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms on I Monday, March 22, at 8 p.m., when it [ is to be hoped as many members as ‘ possible will be present.
