GERMAN GAMBLE
HOPES OF DEFEATING RUSSIAN DRIVE BEHIND SOUTHERN ARMIES. ENEMY CENTRAL DEFENCES AGAIN PIERCED. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, March 15. There are no details of the great battle which is being fought at Izyum. on the Donetz River, where the Germans are trying to force a crossing. North of Kharkov Soviet artillery is breaking up attacks by enormous forces of tanks and infantry. German commentators are emphasising that the battle is a gamble. It is commented in London that the Germans, while going all out to regain control of the vital communications centre in southern Russia for their own use, are also aiming at preventing the Russians from driving behind the German armies in the south. On the central front, today’s Moscow communique reports, the Russians are continuing to develop their offensive west and south-west of Viazma and have captured a town 15 miles along the railway to Smolensk. South of Byeloi (to the north of Smolensk) the Germans are trying to stem the advance in a new defence line, but the Soviet troops have pierced this in one sector and taken several villages.
