PROFITEERING CHARGE
COMPANY HEAVILY FINED. MAGISTRATE’S COMMENT. (By Telegranh—Press Association.) NAPIER, March 15. For having sold a cycle bracket cup at a price exceeding the standard, Electric Batteries Ltd., Hastings, were fined £2O and costs 30s in the Magistrate’s Court, Napier, today. Prosecuting counsel, Mr H. C. Sproule, stated that the cost of the bracket cup was 9d and it was sold by defendant at 6s. The current price in Hastings was 2s, which gave quite a handsome profit. Two complaints had been received by the inspector of factories in Napier as to charges being made by the defendant company, said Mi' Sproule, and the inspector visited the company on two occasions and warned them about overcharging. At a later date an inspector of the price tribunal visited the shop and purchased a bracket cup, for which he was charged 6s. In imposing the fine, Mr J. Miller, S.M., said it was the worst case that had come before him. It was the duty of all retailers to adhere strictly to the standard prices.
