The Theodore Roosevelt Bird Sanctuary at Long Island, founded in memory of the great president’s fondness for birds, began in 1923 as a dreary tin can gully in which there were very few birds. Today, says “Forest and Bird,” it is a haven of rest for both birds and men. The gully has been converted into a delightful place full of trees that provide food and shelter for the 150 species of birds to be found there. Each year it is visited by over 15,000 people, who go there to learn how to attract birds to farms and homes. Sanctuaries such as this would be a boon to New Zealand cities, and like the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary, could be established at small cost.
