ANOTHER RETREAT

FROM DEFENCES WEST OF KHARKOV NAZI ASSAULTS THROWN BACK IN SOUTH. TOLL TAKEN OF ENEMY TANKS & TROOPS. •4 (British Official Wireless.) • RUGBY, March 13. Sanguinary fighting is continuing round. Kharkov, and the situation for the city is clearly critical. Moscow to- ' night reports: “Large forces of enemy tanks and infantry attacked the Russian positions west of Kharkov. Under pressure, the Red Army took up new positions, from which it repelled attacks, inflicting enormous losses. North of the city the Germans continued to attack, resulting in more . heavy fighting, while south of the city an enemy regiment supported by many tanks made repeated assaults on the Soviet positions, but in the end were compelled to fall back to their starting point.” A message from Moscow says that several days ago the Germans concentrated 150 tanks and a number of regiments, which tried to crasn •through the defences of Kharkov, but ' they lost nearly half of their panzer units and the attack was held. With fresh reserves the Germans struck in another direction, sending in incessant waves of 20 or 30 tanks. The Soviet resistance, however, was very .stubborn, and cavalry joined in in the city, while west of Kharkov the efficiency and heroism of Soviet sappers under most difficult conditions helped to inflict very heavy losses on the enemy. One Red Army formation in two days’ fighting crippled 46 German tanks, destroyed more than 100 lorries and wiped out several thousand men. The “Red Star” says that Kharkov is being subjected to an incessant blitz, with dogfights raging in the sky.
