OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS
ARMED FORCES APPEAL BOARD (To the Editor) Sir, —I see from your issue yesterday that a half-hearted explanation has now been made as to why the local Appeal Board has not been hearing appeals lately. Is at not a fact that the only person who has refused to sit is the chairman of the board and that the other two members have at all times been ready, and willing to act? If so, surely there should be some provision for a substitute chair; man to act in such cases, so that the;, public can get the service to whichr they are entitled. Is it fair to the men called up for service that they should be held in suspense for so long because members of the board are hot satisfied with their pay or because someone else is paid / more? What position would we be in if oUjr troops refused to fight because the American troops are paid better? They are doing the job they undertook to do for the common good. Questions have been asked in. Parliament about the difference in payment of the two boards at Napier, but I notice both boards are still continuing to act notwithstanding any “anomaly.”—l am, etc., DISGUSTED. Masterton, March 11. The secretary of the Wairarapa Armed Forces Appeal Board, Mr G. F. Whitlock, states that the position had been complicated by the recent resignation of the deputy-chairman, Mr J. W. Card, of Featherston, through pressure of private business. The question of the appointment of another deputy-chairman is now under consideration and it is hoped that the board will be able to deal with outstanding appeals at an early date.
