MASTERTON DAIRY CO.
MR W. H. HARCOMBE APPOINTED CHAIRMAN. WARM TRIBUTE PAID TO LATE MR EWINGTON. Mr W. H. Harcombe has been appointed chairman of directors of the Masterton Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd., in succession to the late Mr J. C. Ewington. Warm tributes were paid to Mr Ewington’s services at yesterday’s meeting of the directors when Mr Harcombe’s appointment 1 was made. Mr Harcombe said the late Mr Ewington had been chairman of directors since 1907 and by reason of his qualifications and profound knowledge of the dairy industry his death was a very serious loss to the company. Mr Harcombe emphasised the long and sterling, service Mr Ewington had rendered on behalf of the company, stating that his death was very deeply regretted by the directors and suppliers alike. Other directors fully endorsed Mr Harcombe’s remarks and it was decided to forward a letter of condolence to Mr Ewington’s. family. New Coal Area. The Westport Coal Company is preparing to develop a new area of coal located by boring on “Cook’s”- lease adjoining their present holdings. The coal is bituminous, of high class quality, and over 30ft in thickness. It is proposed to run an aerial from the mine down to Waimangaroa, there to connect with the railway. Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday, the commencement of the 40 penitential days of Lent, fell yesterday. The name is derived from an ancient ceremony still observed in the Catholic Church, in which the sign of the Cross is marked on the foreheads of the congregation with ashes made from palms which were consecrated on the preceding Palm Sunday. The recitation of the Comminution Service is the only special observance prescribed by the Anglican Prayer Book. Ministry of Works. The establishment of a Ministry of Works is provided for in the Ministry of Works Bill which was introduced and read a first time in the House of Representatives last night. Amalgamation of the Public Works Department and the Housing Department is authorised by the Bill, which also provides for the appointment of a Minister of Works to exercise Ministerial control over the combined department. The Bill also authorises the appointment of a Commissioner of Works and a Deputy Commissioner of Works. Both are to be appointed by the Gov-ernor-General-in-Council to hold office during his pleasure. The- Minister of Public Worke, Mr Semple, said it was not proposed to smother the housing programme by amalgamating the department with the Public Works Department. -The idea of the measure was to bring about a form of organisation that would create greater co-op-eration and co-ordination.
