MORE BROADCASTS

OF RELIGIOUS SERVICES. RECOMMENDED IN AUSTRALIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) CANBERRA, March 9. An increased broadcasting of religious services has been recommended by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Broadcasting. Of almost 100 Australian commercial stations to which a questionnaire was submitted, fifty advised that they did not broadcast any religious services and eighteen said they did so only occasionally. The Committee recommendted that new broadcasting licences, where practicable, should be allocated to three religious groups—the Church erf England, the Roman Catholic Church and a church committee representing other Christian denominations. Other recommendations included the encouragement of the present trend in favour of Australian composers and the engagement of Australian artists. It was also suggested that an. influential approach should be made to radio script writers and radio actors, soliciting their co-operation in improving broadcasts in which incorrect English and parodies on Australian speech destroy much of the work of teachers.
