“WINGS FOR VICTORY”
London’s great effort. OVER £ 72,000,000 IN HAND. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 9.32 a.m.) RUGBY, March 9. The figure in London’s “Wings for Victory” Week had reached £72,556,136 at noon today. (The goal is £150,000,000). On Monday there was a procession past the Mansion House, where the Lord Mayor, with Sword and Mace, took the salute. All the units of the Fighting Services took part, as well as civilian defence workers. The R.A.F. displayed models of the 80001 b and 40001 b bombs. TheWnder-Secretary for Air, Captain Balfour, in a speech, said: “Don’t think the Luftwaffe has been driven from the skies. It is still a formidable force.” Two other speakers referred to the R.A.F.’s' part in the forthcoming Allied offensive. Lord Brabazon said: “Wh'en we invade Europe, we must have overwhelming air superiority—a cloud of aircraft' that will make air opposition to invasion impossible.” The Chief of Air Personnel said: “The RjA.F.’s efforts in the past two years have done much to make the opening of a western front possible.”
