POLISH SOCIALISTS
TWO EXECUTED IN RUSSIA ALLEGED SUBVERSIVE ACTIVITIES. DISCLOSURE BY EMBASSY IN WASHINGTON. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) WASHINGTON. March 3. The Soviet Embassy has disclosed that two former Polish Socialist Labour leaders, M. Henryk Erlich and M. Victor Alter, were executed in Russia because they attempted to discourage Soviet troops and urged a separate peace with Germany. The president of the American Federation of Labour, Mr Green, had cabled M. Molotov seeking intervention in their case. The Soviet Ambassador, M. Litvinov, sent a letter to Mr Green explaining that Erlich and Alter went to Moscow when Germany invaded Poland, were sentenced to death for subversive activities in August, 1941, and were released at the Polish Government’s request. When the Russians were later engaged in desperate battles against Germany, Erlich and Alter resumed their hostile attitude, were again tried, convicted and executed.
