A serious accident occurred in the entrance of a tube station in London soon after the alert was sounded last night, causing the death by suffocation of a large number of people. A Ministry of Home Security statement says an elderly woman tripped near the foot of a stairway, bringing down an elderly man and others. Within a few seconds the whole landing and lower steps were covered with bodies and the people behind, who could not see what had taken place, continued to press on. . . By the time the people were extricated it was found that 178 had died and that a further 60 were in need of hospital treatment.
