MAURICEVILLE WEST

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The annual meeting of the Mauriceville District Women’s Institute was held in the Mauriceville East Hall on Tuesday afternoon, Miss R. Mortensen presiding over a large number of members and visitors. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs Jackson and Mrs Wilkin. The president extended a very warm welcome to all, especially to Mrs H. Freeman, ‘of Masterton, who was a past-president of the Institute. Members were reminded that on March 19 it was the Institute’s turn to provide the supper at the Anzac Club. The annual report was read and adopted. The treasurer presented the balance sheet which showed the Institute to be in a very sound financial position. During the year 66 parcels had been packed and sent to members of the fighting services overseas. Miss Mortensen, on behalf of the committee, thanked and presented to Mrs Baine a small token in appreciation of the work she had done in packing the parcels. It was decided to support the proposal to hold the Dominion Conference and to send a delegate. The president thanked members for, their work during the past year and wished the Institute every success in the future. The competitions resulted as follows: —Competition: Mrs G. Nielsen 1, Mrs Wilson 2, Mrs Baine 3. Best bloom: Miss R. Mortensen 1, Mrs G. Nielsen 2, Miss J. Larsen 3. Potatoes: Mrs Wilson, 241 b., 1; Mrs G. Nielsen, 121 b., 2; Mrs Osborne, 91b., 3. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs Baine; vice-presidents, Mesdames McWhirter and F. Pain; secretary, Mrs F. Pain; treasurer, Mrs G. Wilson; committee, Mesdames Broadbent, O. Mortensen, G. Nielsen, G. Wilson, and Miss J. Larsen; auditor, Mr O. Nikolaisen; press reporter, Miss J. Larsen. The monthly best bloom competition resulted as follows: Miss J. Larsen 1, Mrs Spackman 2, Mrs McWhirter 3. Mrs Urquhart and Mrs Jameson were welcomed as members. Afternoon tea was served by Miss Mortensen.
