The United States Director of Civil Defence, Mr James Landis, commenting on Berlin’s statement that the American immunity from air attack would soon be blasted, said: “Hitler may send bombers to America because he wants pictures of burning American cities to show to the Germans.” Mr Landis urged readiness, and he complained that the worst slumps in volunteers occurred after the victory in the Battle of Midway and the occupation of North Africa.
